Elastic waistband in casing

Elastic can be pulled through a casing to form a stretch waistband. The casing can be formed from a separate fabric band or a self extension of the top of the waistline. Different types of elastic will stretch to different degrees. To achieve a comfortable fit, place a length of elastic around your waist. Stretch to a comfortable fit and add approx. 2" (5 cm) for seam allowance.

To add a separate casing: Fold long casing piece in half lengthwise and press. With right sides together, stitch across short ends, leaving an opening for inserting elastic on the facing half of the band. Press seam open. With right sides together, pin and stitch casing to edge of waistline. Clean-finish raw edges. Using a safety pin or elastic bodkin, insert elastic into casing, making sure to secure end of elastic to garment before pulling all the way through. Pull elastic up to fit comfortably. Stitch across ends of elastic to secure. Hand or machine stitch opening of casing closed.

To construct a self extension casing: Clean-finish raw edge. Fold over along casing line and topstitch in place, leaving an opening for inserting elastic. Using a safety pin or elastic bodkin, insert elastic into casing, making sure to secure end of elastic to garment before pulling all the way through. Pull elastic up to fit comfortably.  Stitch across ends of elastic to secure.  Topstitch opening of casing closed.
